The 2008 Pony Express Re-Ride will proceed from West to East. The Nevada portion takes place between June 19th and June 21st. The mail will be traveling east bound, leaving Sacramento, CA on the 18th of June, and arriving in Saint Joseph, Missouri on June 28th. The ride schedule for Nevada may be found below. Bill Massie K7NHP is the point of contact for signing up for the re-ride.

Each year since 1989, members of SIERA have furnished communications for the riders as they travel through Nevada. The ride across Nevada takes several days, and proceeds day and night through much undeveloped and uninhabited territory. Around the clock communications are needed to help coordinate the riders so that transfers can be made in a timely fashion and contacts can be made in case of an emergency. We utilize VHF repeaters that cover the ride corridor from the west side of Nevada through central Nevada. Once the riders reach the eastern parts of Nevada, portable/mobile HF stations are used to relay information from the VHF stations following the riders back to Carson City.

This a lot of fun, and gives the Ham Operator a chance to use their radio equipment in a field environment. Depending on what portion of the route you are assigned, you may be on paved roads, or on the dirt in your 4X4. Some operators are stationed on top of mountains as a VHF/HF relay station. It is great to get out of town, operate, and see our beautiful Nevada.

More information to follow.

To those who have not yet participated in the Re-Ride support; give it some thought! We can always use the help. If you have a desire to have some fun and watch a bit of history reenacted, this would be an excellent opportunity for you. Watch this website for information regarding support of the 2008 Pony Express Re-Ride. All amateur radio operators are welcome and encouraged to support this historical and fun event.

And don't forget the opportunity to tell tall tales at the after-ride potluck dinner.

To whet your appetite, here are some photos from the 2007 Pony Express Re-Ride. These photos show nine Ely riders meeting two riders heading west on Overland Pass West, and John Abrott's (KD7NHC) pickup as a VHF/HF relay station on Overland Pass West.
